WHO AM I?

Pubic Speaking and Singing Coach

Rebecca Lodge Birkebaek

With parents in the arts - a ballet dancer and an actor - there was never any question that I would end up on the stage! I started playing the piano at five, and ever since then I've made music and had a passion for performing.

Professional
I have been a professional performer now for over 25 years, and studied at the Royal Academy of Music, graduating with a First Class degree in singing and piano. My career as a professional musician includes working as a singer, pianist, educationalist, TV and radio broadcaster, workshop leader and choral conductor and I have been very lucky to work for two amazing institutions, the BBC Singers and the Royal Opera House.

BBC Singers

The BBC Singers are the UK’s only full time professional singing group. They perform regularly on Radio 3 where everything that they do is broadcast. Their work includes concert performances, studio recordings, world tours, and a lot of education and outreach work. That’s where I found my passion for helping people to make their voice heard. First of all their singing voice, because obviously that’s what I was doing at the time and in the workshops that I led during my 15 years with the group (over 200) I got huge pleasure from helping people discover what it felt like to use their voice more efficiently, more effectively, and to discover the joy that singing together brings.

Royal Opera House

When I moved to the Opera House in 2016, the schedule made it difficult to fit in much education and outreach work and I really missed that. I absolutely loved performing on that world-class stage with incredible colleagues, but I really missed having the opportunity to help other people discover their voice.

Just before Christmas 2019 I had a knee replacement and during my recovery period, I had plenty of time to think about the next phase of my career. I will always be a performer - it’s an intrinsic part of who I am - but I felt that I needed a different focus in life. I was invited to a networking meeting and there I had a light bulb moment!

I can help you

At that meeting, I saw lots of people looking absolutely terrified at the thought of having to get up and speak. They seemed nervous and worried about what they were going to say and how they were going to say it,  and I thought, “I can help you”. Being a performer is all about having skills, strategies and techniques in place that enable you to give your best every single time you perform, regardless of the situation. That experience is what has led me to develop my work with people’s voices to include helping people speak in public with confidence, as well as helping them sing.

During my performing career I learnt many lessons which directly relate to what I do now:

  • Show up and engage with whoever you are meeting

  • Know your craft

  • Practice

  • Communication

  • Presentation skills

  • Being a team player and supportive colleague

  • Don’t be a diva!

  • Be persistent

  • Deal with rejection effectively

  • Dream big!

  • Enjoy what you are doing!
